The most current record of the population of San Diego is estimated to be approximately 1,326,000, which is an increase of about 1.1% from the last record of the population.  San Diego is the second-most populous city in the state of California and the eighth-most populous city in the entire country of the United States of America.  Based on the total land area and the total population of the city, the population density of San Diego is about 4,040 people per square mile.

Demographics of San Diego

The gender breakdown of the city of San Diego is fairly equal, but there are slightly more males than females: 49.7% female and 50.3% male. The largest race demographic is the white alone group, which makes up about 48% of the population. However, there is a very large Hispanic and Latino population as well as they make up about 33% of the population. The Asian population of the city is approximately 12% of the population.

Religion in San Diego

About 44% of the population of the city of San Diego identify with a religious affiliation. The largest of these affiliations is the Roman Catholic Church, which makes up about 68% of the religious population. The next largest affiliation is Judaism, which makes up about 6% of the population. The Mormon population makes up about 4% of the population.

Sports in San Diego

The city of San Diego has two professional sports teams: San Diego Chargers and the San Diego Padres. The San Diego Chargers participates in the National Football League and they play in Qualcomm Stadium. The Chargers have never been a Super Bowl Championship in all of franchise history. The San Diego Padres participates in Major League Baseball and they play in Petco Park. The Padres have never been the World Series Champions in the entire franchise history of the team.

Beaches in San Diego

Due to the extensive coastline of 70 miles of the city, San Diego has become over the years a great place to go to the beach. With over 20 beaches, the coastline is a great place to go to sit on a sandy beach or explore the rocky cliffs of another beach. Anywhere you go, though, you will have a terrific view of the beautiful water of the Pacific Ocean. One of the most iconic beaches is Mission Beach. This centrally located spot is the epitome of a Southern California beach, thanks to its busy boardwalk and iconic wooden Giant Dipper roller coaster. The best beach for water sports is La Jolla Shores. Thanks to the gentle waves, this is where tourists and locals alike learn to surf, scuba dive and kayak.

Whale watching along the coasts of the Pacific Ocean has become a very popular event. Over 20,000 gray whales migrate south from Alaska to give birth to more whales.
