The current population of the city of Phoenix, Arizona is estimated to be about 1,488,750, which is an increase of about 1.3% from the last record of the population.  The city of Phoenix is the most populous city in the state of Arizona and the sixth-most populous city in the entire country.  However, Phoenix happens to be the most populous capital city in the entire country, as it is the capital city of Arizona.  Based on the total land area and the total population of the city, the population density of Phoenix is estimated to be about 1080 people per square mile.

Demographics of Phoenix

The largest demographic of the city of Phoenix is the population that identifies as white alone, which makes up about 47% of the population. The next largest demographic in the city is the Hispanic or Latino group, which makes up about 41% of the population. The Black or African American demographic makes up about 7% of the population. The gender breakdown among the population is fairly equal, but males make up about 50.2% of the city.

The largest range of ages among the population is the 25 to 54 year old range, which makes up about 44% of the population. Only 9% of the population is under the age of 5, and only 0.9% of the population is 85 years or older.

Religion in Phoenix

Overall, the population of the city of Phoenix is much less religious than the national average. Only 39% of the population identifies with a religious affiliation, compared to the national average of 49%. The largest organization in the city is the Roman Catholic Church, which makes up about 14% of the population. The Mormon population makes up about 4% of the population. Those who identify with an Eastern religion make up about 1.1% of the population, which is about twice as many as the national average of the country.

Sports in Phoenix

The city of Phoenix has professional teams in four of the major sports: hockey, baseball, basketball, and football. The Phoenix Coyotes participates in the National Hockey League and they play in the Arena. The Coyotes were founded in 1996 and used to be the Winnipeg Jets. The Arizona Diamondbacks are based out of Phoenix and they participate in Major League Baseball. The home field for the team is Chase Field. The Phoenix Suns participate in the National Basketball Association and they play in the US Airways Center. Lastly, the Arizona Cardinals are based out of Glendale and play in University of Phoenix Stadium. The Cardinals participate in the National Football League.

Historical Population of Phoenix

Historically, the population of Phoenix has been much greater than the populations of Denver, Colorado and Tucson, Arizona.  Also, the population of the city has increased significantly since 1990, except for between the years 2009 and 2010.  There was also a sharp jump in the population between the years 1999 and 2000.
